PIID Workshop

MOSAIC provides a one-day training session on how to develop Practice Implementation Indicator Descriptions (PIID’s). PIID’s are the key to any SCAMPI appraisal. The higher quality the PIID’s are, the smoother and faster the SCAMPI appraisal goes. Poorly written PIID’s can either cause extraordinary efforts by the appraisal team to conduct the appraisal or leave gaping holes in the evidence so that the organization does not receive complete credit for the work it is performing. In this one-day training, PIID developers will learn the role of PIID’s, how to structure good PIID’s, how to manage the PIID’s so the data stays current for appraisals, and how to prepare the appraisal team to use the PIID’s.

As part of this workshop, MOSAIC provides a PIID template that specifies the evidence that is appropriate for each CMMI practice. The workshop incorporates adding actual project data into the template so that the MOSAIC Lead Appraiser can provide immediate feedback on how well the PIID’s are being written. Once the PIID portion of the template is completed, the template can then be used by the appraisal team to capture notes about the practice evidence and rate practice characterizations.

The timing of this training is important if an organization is looking to perform a SCAMPI appraisal. It is MOSAIC’s experience that four to six weeks are needed to develop quality PIID’s. This training should be conducted four to six weeks ahead of the appraisal readiness review, not the onsite period. While it is not necessary to have the Introduction to CMMI course before taking the PIID training, the two are most effective when conducted close to each other.
